Wedding Themes: What Are They and Why Do I Need One?

The theme of a wedding is the mood that it sets for everyone who attends. It can be shown through the style of the ceremony and reception, decor, food, and other unique twists.

While wedding planning, I struggled the most with deciding on a theme. I felt as though picking a theme was more appropriate for a birthday party than a wedding, but once I understood what it meant, I was glad I chose one.

I chose earthy and elegant as our theme because it described my husband and I, and it was the mood we wanted to set. Once I narrowed the theme I was able to focus my vision in one direction. When I chose a color palette, decorations, and style I filtered through the theme earthy and elegant. It made decisions easier because if I was going to use an idea, it had to fit or I eliminated it. It kept me from choosing random ideas that were good, but didn’t go together at all. It gave everything a unified feel.

The best example of our theme was in the reception centerpieces. We had two different ones that alternated tables. One was a classic hydrangea dripping in pearls and the other was a sparkly lantern with a rose on the side. They had the same votive candles, mirrors, and table numbers, but each centerpiece conveyed either earthiness or elegance.

I hope this clarifies wedding themes for you and how you can apply it to your wedding. Happy wedding planning!
